We’re living in a world where attention is the most valuable currency you can earn, and the hardest to keep.
People aren’t starved for information, to the contrary, they’re drowning in it.
What they are starved for is meaning, connection, emotion, and a reason to care.
Information Tells. Storytelling Transforms.
You can give your team a list of priorities, share a slide deck full of bullet points, and outline the strategy in perfect corporate language. And they’ll forget most of it by tomorrow.
But if you tell them a story — a real one (authenticity is the key here!) — about why this work matters, who it impacts, what’s at stake, or what’s possible…
They’ll remember it.
Storytelling is the delivery system for influence!
Here are two simple, powerful ways to elevate any message:
- Start With a Moment, Not a Message
Instead of leading with the point you want to make, start with a moment that illustrates it. This could be:
- A conversation you had
- A mistake you made
- A client story
- A turning point
- A tension
- A win
- A loss
Give people something to visualize, to feel, and to relate to.
Once they’re with you emotionally, then you deliver the message.
- Make It About Them, Not You
At Black Sheep, we call this Audience Intelligence (AI).
When you share a story, connect it back to the listener’s world:
- What does this mean for their work?
- What does it change for their team?
- What does it unlock for their future?
- What challenge does it help them navigate?
A story becomes memorable when the audience sees themselves inside it.
In today’s attention economy, information alone isn’t enough. People don’t remember what you told them. They remember how you made them feel.
If you want your message to land, to stick, and to move people to action, don’t just communicate the facts! Tell the story behind them.
