The Myth of the Natural Born Leader

by Jeff Black

People love to talk about “natural born leaders,” as if some folks were born ready to run a board meeting. I hate to break it to you, but leadership presence isn’t a birthright, it’s a skill set. And like any skill, it gets sharper because you practice it.

I’ve coached enough executives to know the so‑called naturals often stall out.

They rely on charm and instinct (which works for a while) while the real pros—the ones who actually grow—are quietly putting in the reps.

They study their impact. They adjust their energy. They reflect on questions in the mirror. They learn to stay grounded when the room gets loud.

Presence isn’t magic. It’s muscle memory!

You don’t need to be “born a leader.” You just need to be willing to show up with intention long enough that people start assuming you were.
